Air Source Heat Pump are super efficient converters that turn heat from the air into hot water for your central heating. You can literally heat your home from the atmosphere, even when the temperatures drop as low as -15ºC.
Air Source Heat Pumps do need electricity to run, but because they are 300% efficient at turning the electricity into heat, they are a very cost-effective way of heating your home. The heat output is greater than the electricity input because they are converting renewable heat from the environment.
Air source heat pumps work a bit like your fridge, but in reverse. They take heat out of the air and convert it into hot water. A box in your garden with a big fan inside sucks in air and blows it over a series of pipes that contain a refrigerant liquid. Blowing air over the pipes causes the temperature of the liquid to rise slightly and it boils into a gas.
Next this gas is compressed, which makes it very hot. This hot gas is then passed as quickly as possible to a special hot water tank. A pipe that carries the hot gas is curled up inside the hot water tank like a large version of the element in your kettle. In the same way, the water in the tank is heated up and is then sent to the radiators or a storage tank to be used for household hot water.
The gas is cooled and returns to its liquid state. It’s circulated back to the heat pump to be heated up again.

Air Source Heat Pumps cost between £7000 and £18,000 to buy and install depending on where you live. However the government grants available will bring the cost down to around the same as a conventional central heating system.
Of course, because they use free air to heat your home they are very cheap to run and you should see massive savings on your monthly bills.
Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme
The Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme offers home owners in the UK up to £14,000 from the government to switch to more environmentally friendly ways of heating their homes.
Paid over 7 years, the funding amount is based on how much renewable heat your system produces.

Despite the up-front investment, ASHPs are one of the most efficient ways to heat your home. We’ll find out the running costs when we do our heat loss calculation, but most people save a significant amount of money on their monthly heating bills compared to oil, gas or electric heating systems.
Generally, Air Source Heat Pumps last a lot longer than conventional boilers. You could expect around 20 years of relatively maintenance free service life from your heat pump.
